Clinton Woods retained his IBF light- heavyweight title with a split decision win over Glen Johnson on Saturday.

The third meeting between the combatants proved to be a charm for Woods (40-3-1), as he survived a vicious ninth-round assault from Johnson (44-11-2) and rebounded to seemingly take the last three rounds en route to the win.

Judge Mickey Vann saw it 115-113 for Johnson, however Richard Bays and Roberto Ramirez both scored the fight for the champion, 115-112, and 116-112 respectively.

After fighting to a draw in 2003, Johnson won a unanimous decision three months later. The fighters are now even as the third fight featured many close rounds that could have been scored either way. However, the high work rate and consistent pressure from Woods allowed him to hold on to his belt.

In other action on Saturday, Frenchman Souleymane M'baye scored a fourth round technical knockout of Argentine Raul Horacio Balbi to capture the vacant WBA light welterweight title
