Loc: Time to play the Game

Offline
A lot took place this Saturday so let's not waste any time.

1. Texas
Defeated prior #1 Oklahoma. A heck of a ball game and a gutty performance by this team overall. They get no rest as they get to play Missouri at home this coming Saturday. Being #1 in my poll hasn't been so kind. They are going to need to be at the top of their game once again. This will be game 2 of 4 in a row vs a top 10 team. I said last week they needed to go 3-1 to have any shot at the title thinking the 1 might be vs Oklahoma. 1 down 3 to go. This won't be easy with the bullseye on them.

2. Alabama
I couldn't reward Alabama the #1 spot without playing due to Texas winning. Plus in thinking about the last six quarters of play they haven't been the same team that played the first half vs Georgia. They have Mississippi at home next week and could inherit the #1 spot if Texas slips.

3. USC
Did you really think they were out of it. If they had to lose, getting it early was the way to go. They hammered AZ ST, don't be fooled by the 28-0 score. They have Washington St next. No way they lose this game.

4. Penn St
Absolutely destroyed Wisconsin and I am still not 100% on this team due to how weak the Big 10 appears to be. I have talked about this for weeks now and it only got worse this week. They face Michigan at home next. Penn St should be favored by 4 TD's in this game. Anything less than -28 bet large on the Lions. Yes I said Michigan should be a 4 TD underdog.

5. BYU
I will move them up 1 spot this week. They won vs New Mexico in an unimpressive fashion. I am going to discount this effort as they have a game in primetime on Thursday night at TCU. This will be a test to see how good BYU really is. If they lose their title hopes are gone for good.

6. Georgia
They looked sluggish off their bye week following the loss to Alabama. They should have blown out TN early but kept them in the game. Georgia has a tough road to haul as they face 3 straight Top 20 match ups in a row. Next up Vanderbilt.

7. Oklahoma
They fall from #1 after losing to Texas. They have Kansas next on deck but the bigger issue is how they respond after this loss. Bradford had a good game but the defense was exposed big time. With Texas Tech and Oklahoma St to end the season they have time to fix things but it's unlikely.

8. Florida
They surface back in my top 10 after manhandling previous #2 LSU. This has been a strange ride for Florida and I haven't been overly impressed with them. But if they can play the way they did this week the rest of the season, watch out.... I think they have 2 games left that can derail them which are back to back on the road. Georgia then Vanderbilt. They will beat everyone else on the schedule. If they can come away undefeated the rest of the way, they may be back in the title picture.

9. Oklahoma St
A great win on the road over Missouri. A big defensive effort that was totally unexpected. The team is undefeated on the year. Their road doesn't get any easier. They have Baylor next, then at Texas. They also play at Texas Tech and have Oklahoma to end the regular season campaign. For them the sky's the limit as they really control their own destiny from here on out.

10. Texas Tech
A surprisingly tough game at home vs Nebraska and this team has been hard to read. They haven't played anyone of substance and if Nebraska their toughest opponent to date can take them to OT. It's a sign of potential problems ahead. Next game at TX A&M.

Dropped out
#2 LSU and #5 Missouri

So you say Freak how can you drop LSU from #2 to #10. Easily... a week off to prepare for Florida and they lose 51-21. Don't get me wrong I like the team but they have been hurt by a lack of leadership from the QB position. I said last week that this was test 1 of 4. They failed miserably. They were at one point only down 20-14 then the wheels fell off again as it did in the frist qtr down 17-0.

As for Missouri they are a good team but I revisited their schedule and they finally played a team of substance and lost at home. If you look at their schedule they beat Nevada, Buffalo and SE MO St. not teams of true caliber. You can say but they beat Illinois. Sure that same team that lost to MN at home as 12 1/2 point favorites today?????

That leads me to my ongoing bashing of the Big 10 conference. You guys probably think I have something against the Big 10. Far from it, I love the Big 10, however they can't compete right now with the likes of the SEC and Big 12 which is sad. Football is king in the Big 10. They don't think of anything else all year long. Recruiting has been horrible and the Big 10 has fallen to new depths. Indiana has never been a power in football they lost to Ball St for the first time ever. Then Toledo wins at the Big House. You know Toledo who gave up 141 points their last 3 games. The same team that lost at home to Florida International. Who???

Here's the irony in this whole thing. The talk was that the Rose Bowl wasn't going to feature the traditional BIG 10 vs PAC 10 match up. Well if USC doesn't play in the title game they will be in the Rose Bowl and either Penn St or Ohio St will be there. Wouldn't you love to see USC/Ohio St Part 2? Another USC ass kicking. We all know the history of Ohio State in big games the last few years. Tsk Tsk....

We had a first as well both Eastern Michigan and Army won the prior week SU as 20 point dogs which I talked about last week. Well they played against one another this week. I can't ever think of a time that has happened. Army won 17-13 and covered the final spread of -2.5

Remember last week I talked about Virginia who beat Maryland and I also talked about how fast East Carolina rose to the big time and crashed just as quick. Well they met this week and Virgina won. This just goes to prove me point that any type of top 10 or top 25 poll done before week 3 is a joke.

You remember ECU beating top 10 West Virginia and then VA Tech. Where are any of these teams now? You laughed when I had BYU ranked in the top 10 and where are they now?

Ok name one of the two teams Gardner Webb beat this year?

You ask why.... Georgia Tech beat Gardner Webb 10-7 at home today. This is the same GW team that is 5th in the Big South conference and owns wins over power houses Tusculum who???? and Austin Peay. By the way GW lost the prior week to that other powerhouse Charleston Southern.

Did I mention that GA Tech had to block a 43 yd fg attempt with 3 seconds left to preserve the win. Ga Tech had 199 total yds for the game.

By the way for those wondering. Tusculum beat Brevard College 55-42 on Saturday.

This just goes to show how bad play is around the country or is it that the limit of 85 scholarships has truly done what the NCAA wanted?

You tell me. Oh wait you won't tell me because you won't reply.

Thanks for reading though, this does become a lot more interactive when you reply though. After all this is a sports forum right?

Until next week may all your ups and downs be in bed.

BYU over New Mexico unimpressive......you move them UP one spot because they were looking ahead to TCU? Look at the teams that you have ranked behind BYU? Who cares if they (BYU) DO run the table. They don't have the athletes that these premier conferences have (except the BIG 10). BYU is the equal of a Ole Miss or a Baylor.
