Damon Huard was inaccurate, Larry Johnson was ineffective and the Chiefs defense had another bad day.

But at least Tony Gonzalez broke the record.

A week after Kansas City's first win in nearly a year, the Chiefs got back to their old habits, losing 34-0 today at Carolina. The Chiefs had one first down in the first half. They allowed 442 yards, a long day in what is becoming a long season for a team that can't seem to do much right. The Chiefs now enter their bye week with plenty to think about, and little of it is good.

But at least Gonzalez broke the record.

Huard, in what the Chiefs hope will be his last start before Brodie Croyle returns, had a discouraging exit. He completed 10 of 21 passes for 86 yards. He had two interceptions and lost one fumble. Tyler Thigpen relieved Huard, and he didn't do much better.

Not that the Chiefs defense relieved much pressure. They didn't take advantage of the Panthers' thin offensive line, failing to sack Jake Delhomme or his merciful backup, Josh McCown. Carolina's offensive tackles, Jordan Gross and Jeff Otah, sat out with injuries. The Chiefs rarely pressured a Panthers quarterback and allowed running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to combine for 199 yards rushing.

But at least Gonzalez broke the record.

Gonzalez caught a 6-yard pass from Huard in the first quarter to pass Shannon Sharpe for the most career receiving yards among tight ends. Gonzalez expressed frustration last week that coaches didn't feed him the ball late in the game against Denver. Gonzalez was three yards short of tying Sharpe, but the Chiefs chose to call rushing plays.

Gonzalez said he wanted to break the record at Arrowhead Stadium, where officials would have stopped the game and held a brief ceremony. Instead, Gonzalez's record-breaking catch came on a third-and-16 play in the first quarter. He ran a short curl route, and Huard found him.

Gonzalez walked off the field and tossed the ball toward the sideline. Receiver Jeff Webb and Huard congratulated Gonzalez in an otherwise quiet response.

After that, the smiles went away.
