Hondo

Hondo started the postseason in absolutely miser able fashion yesterday, going double-draino with the Brewers and Cubs, those lovable losers, to lower the earnings to 720 molitors.

Today, Mr. Aitch will try to make some serious se ries hay with the Rays over the Chisox - 10 units. Also, he doesn't think the big fat guy's out of gas yet - 10 on Sabathia to put his stamp on the Philate lists. And, finally, the one and only Jimmy Shields is no fool on the hill, so he'll pepper the Rays with an other 10.

Jim Feist

(961) CHW White Sox
(962) TB Rays
Take "Under"
If the Rays had known that a change in name for 2008 would change their fortunes and end a decade of fumbling and bumbling, they might have done this ages ago. The previously know Devil Rays shortened their names and garnered their first ever divisional title and playoff spot. "Believe it or not, I kept on saying last year we had something special," said first baseman Carlos Pena, a grizzled veteran at age 30 who led the team with 30 home runs and 102 RBIs. The Rays occomplished this despite having the second lowest payroll on opening day. Their strong pitching staff (3.82 era) was third best in baseball. James Shields, today's starter, was a big reason for the excellent staff. Shields was 14-8 with a 3.56 era and went 10-3 with a 3.30 era his final 19 starts. At home he was almost unbeatable, going 9-2 with a 2.59 era. The White Sox trip to the post season wasn't as easy as the Rays. The Sox had to overcome a late slump, winning their final three games and a makeup on Monday against the Tigers just to force a one game playoff with the Twins on Tuesday. Jim Thome provided all the offense needed to propel the Sox to the ALDS with his solo home run in the 7th to catapult the Sox into the playoffs. "We bounce back every time we are against the wall," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. The White Sox will play the post season without arguably their best player, Carlos Quentin (broken wrist) and third baseman Joe Crede (back problems). Javier Vazquez starts today for Chicago against the Rays. Vazquez has been on a bad streak, losing his last three starts, allowing 18 eared runs in just 12 innings (13.50 era). Vazquez is 1-2 against the Rays this year with a 3.54 era and respectable .208 opponent batting average. This will be a well rested Rays staff going against a travel weary White Sox team. Look for the Sox to get little if any runs here in a low scoring game.

Take "(959) LA Dodgers"
It's been 100 years since the Cubs won the World Series. If Game One of their series with the Dodgers is an indicator, make that 101. The Cubs were extremely tight in the series opener and I'm not sure the volatile Carlos Zambrano is clutch enough to rely on in what looms as a must win game. Chad Billingsley is the best of the Dodgers starters and if he's got his good control, he's a real handful for opposing hitters. LA has zero pressure on them off the impressive Game One win, and I think they're worth a play as good sized dogs in this game

Guaranteed Pick: Brian Hansen

Game: Pittsburgh Panthers at South Florida Oct 2 2008 7:45PM
Prediction: under
Reason: Most expect a shootout. As usual, they're dead wrong! Friends, let me be the first to tell you that this game will be a defensive battle. The Under is 3-1 last 4 times when Pittsburgh is an underdog of 10.5 to 21 points. The Under is 2-0 when Pittsburgh is a road underdog of 10.5 to 14 points. The Under is 6-3 last 3 years when Pittsburgh has played on a grass field and that includes a PERFECT 3-0 record this year. Want more? The Under is 7-1 the last 8 times the Bulls were involved in a home game where the total is between 42.5 and 49. That's 87.5%, a percentage that even I'll gladly take. All together now: D-E-F-E-N-S-E. D-E-F-E-N-S-E. D-E-F-E-N-S-E. Go Under!

Guaranteed Pick: Matt *****

Game: Pittsburgh Panthers at South Florida Oct 2 2008 7:45PM
Prediction: Pittsburgh Panthers
Reason: **79% **2.5** Big East Game of the Week** Pittsburgh and head coach Dave Wannstedt get unwarranted slaps in the face as far as I’m concerned. The Panthers have yet to surpass the .500 mark and have failed to make it to a bowl in his three years so it arguably can be said that they have underachieved. However, Wannstedt is finally directing his own players now and with an experienced group, they will be contending for the Big East title. A scare in Syracuse last week due to a possible lookahead here will have Pittsburgh focused.
The Bulls are 5-0 and right now look like the team to beat in the conference. They looked very impressive last week in dismantling NC State but overall, they have not exactly been a dominating team. The week before they snuck by a horrid Florida International team following a close win over Kansas. It took overtime to take out Central Florida and the first win was over FCS team Tennessee-Martin. This team is solid but should not be laying two touchdowns in conference action against a top tiered team.

The South Florida defense is solid as it is ranked 8th in the nation overall and 4th against the run, allowing just 58.8 ypg. Now comes a test however. The last three offenses the Bulls have faces are ranked 94th, 113th and 110th in rushing offense and the Panthers, while ranked 60th currently, will be the toughest test to date. They rushed for a season high 241 yards and while Syracuse was not a big test, it does provide momentum. Overall, Pittsburgh is averaging 152.8 ypg and 4.1 ypc.

The defense could very well be short handed once again as South Florida All-American defensive end George Selvie and defensive tackle Terrell McClain likely will miss their second consecutive game. On the other side, the Panthers defense is playing well, allowing just 306.5 ypg, which is 32nd in the nation. The team allowed just 254 total yards to Bowling Green in the opener but it was hurt by four turnovers. The Panthers should very well be 4-0 heading into this game.

The rushing defense of the Bulls as mentioned is solid but Pittsburgh falls into a contrarian situation based on that defense. Play against home favorites between 10.5 and 21 points that are allowing fewer than 100 ypg on the ground, after giving up fewer than 40 yards rushing in their last game. This situation is 34-10 ATS (77.3 percent) over the last 10 seasons. Pittsburgh is 5-2 ATS L7 road games against a team with a winning record while the Bulls are 0-6 ATS L6 against teams with a winning record. Play Pittsburgh Panthers 2.5 Units

**SERIES** play from David Malinsky

3* TAMPA BAY RAYS vs Chicago White Sox for the **SERIES**

In what may be the biggest mismatch of the first round of the playoffs the oddsmakers have come up far short here, perhaps showing that same lack of respect that the Rays have had to deal with all season. Now a team that went 57-24 at home has their turf for the majority of the series against a side that was 35-46 on the road, and what should be a -200 is left far shorter. The Tampa advantages at home are most significant ? as we have written often this season, the White Sox offensively were a ?one trick pony?, mashing the ball with the best of teams at home, but lacking in all other aspects of play. They finished 11th in the A.L. in batting average, 9th in walks, dead last in triples by a wide margin, and only the Yankees stole fewer bases. Now they face a deep and talented pitching staff that is not going to give up many home runs, and that forces them to find other ways to score. They also come in drained from having to literally play a series of playoff games over the past week merely to get this far, and they are forced to start Javier Vazquez and his awful current form in the opener, which hardly gets their flow off to a good start. Meanwhile the Rays do what the White Sox do not ? they led the A.L. in stolen bases and were 3rd in triples, bringing an ability to make things happen with their speed, particularly with Carl Crawford returning. That speed led to their being rated #1 in the major Leagues on our best defensive charts, where Chicago finished 23rd. That will show over the course of what could be a quick series.

ANNIHILATOR

I'm laying the points with UTAH. I was on Oregon State in its victory over USC, so I do have a healthy respect for the Beavers. However, I expect the venue and the situation to prove too much for the still relatively young Beavers to handle. For starters, it's a natural letdown spot after recording one of the biggest upsets in team history. Additionally, the Beavers have already lost both their road games, most recently getting crushed 45-14 at Penn State. While they don't get nearly as much recognition as the Nittany Lions, the Utes are also a very strong team. They're already 5-0 including a victory at Michigan. Looking back to last season and we find that the Utes have won 13 of their last 14 games (including the win over Navy in the bowl game) with the lone loss coming at BYU. Last season, Utah began the year with a loss at Oregon State, suffering key injuries in the game. The Utes followed that up by losing their home opener vs. Air Force the following week. However, they have responded by winning seven straight games here with each of those victories coming by a minimum of 16 points. The Utes believe that they have the talent to go undefeated this season and get to a BCS Bowl game. They do still have tough games vs. TCU and BYU on tap but they get both those games at home. The win over Michigan was a big help to their case and they know that a convincing blowout win over the Pac-10 team that defeated #1 USC will also go a long way. The fact that the Beavers beat them last year and the fact that the Beavers beat USC last week will ensure that the Utes are fully focused on the task at hand. The Utes have been excellent as favorites of this size in recent seasons. In fact, they're a perfect 6-0 ATS the last six times that they were listed as favorites in the -10.5 to -21 range. This is a chance to get revenge from last year and make a statement nationally. Look for them to respond with a convincing double-digit victory. *Annihilator

BIG EAST GOY

I'm taking the points with PITTSBURGH. I have a lot of respect for South Florida but I also believe that Pittsburgh is much better than most people think. Keep in mind that the Panthers entered the season with a top 25 ranking and were being hailed as one of Pittsburgh's best teams in several years. Many bettors are very down on the Panthers, as they have gotten off to an 0-4 ATS start this season. However, a closer look shows that they're still 3-1 SU and that the lone loss came in their first game and was by only 10 points. Yes, that was a devastating loss in the opener but the Panthers have bounced back with three straight "character" wins. Looking back to last year and we find that the Panthers are 6-5 SU their last 11 games but that NONE of their five losses came by greater than 11 points. Given their tendency to avoid getting blown out, it's no surprise to find that they are 5-1 ATS the last six times that they were listed as underdogs of greater than eight points. The Bulls do come off an impressive beatdown of NC State, which has helped to keep tonight's line generously high. However, it should be noted that their three previous games were all decided by eight points or less. The Bulls beat a Sun Belt Conference team (Florida International) which was winless at the time, by only eight points. They were also taken to overtime by a Central Florida team which has been outscored by a 92-20 margin by Boston College and Utep in two games since that time. The Bulls' lone home game vs. a 1-A team (they did blowout 1-AA Tennessee Martin) resulted in a 3-point win over Kansas. These teams have met five times since 2001. South Florida has won three of those games, including each of the last two. However, none of the Bulls' three victories came by greater than 11 points. Conversely, Pittsburgh's two victories (2004 and 2005) both came by a minimum of 14 points. While the Panthers have now gone 0-5 ATS their last five September games, they typically tend to get going as the weather gets a bit cooler in October. In fact, they're 9-2 ATS their last 11 games played in October. While they didn't cover the spread last week at Syracuse, the Panthers can take some positives from the game. That's because they were trailing 24-16 in the fourth quarter. Faced with a fourth-and-inches at their 33, the usually conservative coach Dave Wannstedt elected to go for it. The gamble paid off and Pitt. never looked back, outscoring Syracuse by an 18-0 margin in the fourth quarter. It was the biggest deficit that the Panthers have ever overcome under Wannestedt and it gives them plenty of confidence, as does the fact that they were a healthy 11 of 18 on 3rd down. In fact, it should also be noted that the Panthers were also 4-for-4 on fourth down against Iowa the previous week, although all of those fourth down plays came while on the Hawkeyes' side of the 50. Either way, I believe that those are the type of things that build positive momentum and I expect the Panthers to carry that momentum into this evening's extremely important game. Note that the Panthers are 3-1 ATS the last four times they were coming off a victory over a conference opponent and is a profitable 27-15-2 ATS their last 44 in that situation. Look for them to build on those stats as they take this evening's game down to the wire with a solid shot at the upset. *Big East GOY

O.C. Dooley

"1 UNIT" PLAYOFF BASEBALL (Brewers -130 at Phillies in a 6:05 eastern start on TBS---------Sabathia versus Myers):

Even though Milwaukee dropped the opener of this series by a 3-1 count yesterday, they did have a pair of runners on base in the NINTH inning against Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge. In addition the Brewers were competitive against Phillies ace Cole Hamels, but odds are the offense will be much more successful this evening. At one time Brett Myers was the ace of the Phillies as he came up to the majors the same year as Cubs #1 draft pick Mark Prior. Both Myers and Prior were heavily hyped hurlers, and only Myers has been able to stay healthy. Actually Myers was NOT mentally healthy in the early part of this season when in the initial 17 assignments in a return to the rotation (3-9, 5.84 ERA), he was on pace to give up 50 HOMERS by the All Star Break. Following a three-week demotion to the minor leagues, Myers came back strong in 11 assignments with an excellent 7-2 record and an ERA (1.80) that was below the two-mark. But in his most recent pair of trips to the mound, Myers' bad mechanics reared its ugly head again as his ERA hit the FIFTEEN mark. While the Phillies had the pitching edge yesterday against a Milwaukee starter (Yovani Gallardo) who had NOT pitched since the month of May, the edge turns to the visitors this evening. I am sure most of you reading this analysis segment are aware that C.C. Sabathia has been untouchable ever since coming to Milwaukee via the trade route. To make a long story short, last year's American League Cy-Young award winner has the BEST ERA in the majors (1.87) dating back to late April. Even though he is a pitcher, Sabathia should be in the running for MVP since the Brewers have gone a mind boggling "14-3" with him on the mound. Even though this will be Sabathia's fourth consecutive start on "short rest", his statistical numbers remain outstanding. It has been a long wait for both franchises as Philadelphia yesterday won a postseason game for the first time in FIFTEEN YEARS. Milwaukee's last visit to the playoffs was way back in 1982. With Sabathia leaving via free-agency in the offseason(most likely out west where he lives), tonight's start is vital for the Brewers as an organization. Milwaukee's front office showed just how much they wanted to win by firing their manager with just 12 games left in the regular season.

BIG AL

At 6:05pm our selection is on the Milwaukee Brewers over the Philadelphia Phillies. Take the Brewers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
At 2:30pm our selection is on the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays 'over' the total.

At 9 pm, our selection is on the Utah Utes over Oregon State. Last week, we had the Beavers over USC as our Thursday Night Game of the Month for September, and Mike Riley's men rewarded us with an upset 27-21 win over the Trojans as 25-points underdogs.

TOTAL OF YEAR

Go Under!

Cajun-Sports CFB Executive Report- Thursday

THURSDAY 10/02/2008

7:45 PM EDT

2 STAR SELECTION (Rated 1 to 6 Units)

Pittsburgh +13½ over SOUTH FLORIDA

The Bulls put their undefeated record and Top 10 ranking on the line this Thursday, as they host the Panthers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

South Florida may be perfect on the season, but it hasn’t come easy as three of their five wins have come by eight points or less. Last weekend the Bulls did take care of business in convincing fashion, winning at North Carolina State, 41-10.

South Florida has been here before, as they won five straight games to open the season last year; however, they stumbled in a Thursday night game at 5-0 in 2007, losing to Rutgers.

As for Pittsburgh, it got conference play underway last weekend with a 34-24 triumph at hapless Syracuse. It was the third straight win by the Panthers, who have recovered from a 27-17 season-opening loss to Bowling Green and are flying a bit under the radar.

The Panthers are coming off their best offensive performance of the season, as they racked up 407 total yards, including 241 on the ground at Syracuse last weekend. The offense even controlled the ball for over 38 minutes and that is good news for this Pittsburgh team, which is averaging 153 rushing ypg and 200 passing ypg for the season. LeSean McCoy led the charge, as he rushed for 149 yards on 28 carries. It was the first 100-yard effort of the season by McCoy, who had high hopes for a big season. Fellow back, LaRod Stephens-Howling, also got involved against Syracuse, rushing for 71 yards and his first two touchdowns on 13 carries. With the success on the ground, quarterback Bill Stull just needed to manage the offense and he did so by throwing for 166 yards and a score on 17-of-29 pass attempts. Stull hasn't put up big numbers this season, but he has done a decent job in passing for 200 ypg.

Defensively, the Panthers have been stingy this season and opposing clubs are managing just 118 ypg on the ground and only 188 ypg through the air against them. The unit has also registered 13 sacks.

The Bulls obviously had their way with the WolfPack this past weekend, amassing 520 total yards and 29 first downs in a 41-10 triumph. The offense did it on the ground, rushing for 245 yards, and through the air, passing for 275 yards, and didn't commit a single turnover in the process.

Matt Grothe, as usual, did a little of everything for South Florida, as he led the team with 68 rushing yards, in addition to throwing for 259 yards and a score on 20-of-29 pass attempts. Grothe's ability to take off with the ball is a big reason why the Bulls are averaging over 200 rushing ypg on the season.

The defense is giving up just 244 total ypg, with just 59 of those ypg coming on the ground; however, there are some dark clouds on the horizon due to injures.

LB Brouce Mompremier was injured against Florida International 2 weeks ago and is still out.

DE George Selvie did not play against NC State and is doubtful for this game.

SS Carlton Williams played last week, but reinjured his hip that initially occurred against Florida International.

That’s just the main injuries on the defensive side of the ball. With so many troops out from the stop unit, this gives us an opportunity to play AGAINST a team suffering from a cluster of injuries.

If a defense or offense is missing several starters all at once, the team can be very vulnerable to fatigue in addition to being unable to replace the absent talent. A team with a single unit that is missing several key starters and reserves, such as an offensive line without 2+ starters or a defensive backfield missing its top 3 cornerbacks, also figures to struggle. Here, South Florida faces a short week and a very determined team that is getting its “mojo” back after its season-opening loss.

Pitt has become something of an upset specialist, and they hope to spring another one against South Florida. The game is the Panthers 15th Thursday night appearance on ESPN, more than any other Big East school, and they have won four of their last five.

A year ago, Pittsburgh pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in college football history when they deprived their biggest rival, West Virginia, of a chance to play for the national championship in the regular season's final game. They also upset #23 Cincinnati last season.

Several numbers show the Panthers in a good spot here, as they went 4-0 ATS (+12.2 ppg) overall as a road underdog of 7+ points last season, and they are a strong 8-0 ATS (+12.9 ppg) over the past decade as a regular season underdog of 7+ points vs. an undefeated opponent.

Meanwhile, South Florida is a miserable 0-5 ATS (-13.5 ppg) all-time as a non-Saturday favorite/pick ‘em.

Additionally, we have discovered an NCAA Football POWER SYSTEM showing that unbeaten favorites of 1-3 TDs have run into trouble against revenge-minded foes off a victory in the second half of the season. It states:

From Game 6 on, play AGAINST an undefeated favorite of 6½-20½ points vs. an opponent off a SU win and seeking revenge for a SU loss.

All the parameters are active here, as this is the 6th game of the season for the unbeaten Bulls, they are favored by nearly 2 TDs, and will face a revenge-minded Pitt team off a SU win. Such teams are 0-13 ATS just since 2005, failing to cover the spread by more than 14 ppg on average! Such a spread loss here for South Florida would result in an outright loss. While that is not out of the question, we do think they’ll hold on, but only by a TD, and fail to cover this relatively large number.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: SOUTH FLORIDA 28 PITTSBURGH 21

Utah -11 over Oregon St.

Beavers primed for a letdown off of monumental USC upset and will be walking into a beehive tonight in Salt Lake City. Utes will be in revenge mode for season opening loss last season, a game in which they lost QB Johnson and others to injury. Utah was one of the nation's most injury-riddled teams last season, and with those players back, they are more experienced than the 14 returning starters that they list coming ito the season. They are 9-1-1$ as home favorites of 11 >, and have dominate a decent schedule including at Michigan and at Air Force. They are a more experienced team than OSU and hold a big special teams advantage in this game. I think they will jump out early and never look back against a Beavers squad that is a bit nicked up on defense, and in a bad fundamental spot after shocking the world last Thursday. Mountain West continues to be underrated despite 7-2 bowl record last 2 seasons, and a nice OOC resume this season. Utah by 14

S. FLORIDA (-13.5) 28 Pittsburgh 15

04:45 PM Pacific Time Thursday, Oct-02 - Stats Matchup
South Florida finally played a good all-around game last week and I was on them as a Best Bet. However, I still think the Bulls are overrated, as their defense has not played up to last year’s high standards. In fact, the USF defense has barely been better than average in allowing 4.8 yards per play in 4 games against Division 1A opponents that would combine to average 4.9 yppl against an average defensive team. Pitt is a bad offensive team (5.0 yppl against teams that would allow 5.7 yppl to an average attack) and the best part of the Panthers’ attack – their mediocre rushing attack – is likely to get stuffed by a South Florida run defense that has yielded just 3.0 yards per rushing play to teams that would average 4.3 yprp against an average team. South Florida’s pass defense has been the problem so far this season (6.1 yards per pass play allowed to teams that would average only 5.5 yppp against an average team), but Pitt’s Bill Stull (5.2 yppp against teams that would allow 6.5 yppp) doesn’t appear capable of taking advantage of that weakness. Stull will have a bit more time to find receivers if South Florida’s All-American DE George Selvie misses his second straight game with an injured ankle and DB Carlton Williams is also listed as questionable. Pitt’s defense has been great against the pass (4.8 yppp allowed to teams that would average 6.1 yppp) but the Panthers have been soft against the run (5.0 yprp allowed to teams that would average 4.8 yprp) and USF quarterback Matt Grothe (286 yards on 47 rushing plays) and the Bulls’ stable of running backs should post pretty good rushing numbers. Grothe is 0.7 yppp better than average, but he probably will have just modest stats against Pitt’s good pass defense. My math model favors South Florida by only 8 points in this game, but the Bulls are 10-0 ATS all-time as a home favorite from 7 to 14 points and they are also 11-0 ATS at home after a double-digit win when not laying more than 14 points. This looks like a good game to pass.

UAB 31 Memphis (-3.5) 30

05:00 PM Pacific Time Thursday, Oct-02 - Stats Matchup
UAB quarterback Joe Webb has run for 465 yards on 64 rushing plays this season (7.3 yprp) and he’ll run all over a poor tackling Memphis team that has allowed 5.5 yards per rushing play this season to teams that would average 4.6 yprp against an average team. Webb is 0.5 yards per pass play below average but he should also have success throwing the football against a Tigers’ stop unit that is 0.8 yppp worse than average. Memphis has been good offensively, rating at 0.3 yards per play better than average when starting quarterback Arkelon Hall is on the field and UAB has been among the nation’s worst defensive teams through 5 games – allowing 7.0 yppl to teams that would combine to average just 5.2 yppl against an average team. That unit played surprisingly well last week at South Carolina, holding the Gamecocks to just 353 yards at 4.5 yppl and I certainly see the Blazers being better defensively with their top two defensive backs now healthy (CB Springs missed two games and 1st Team All-CUSA S Dunbar missed one game – both started last week for the first time together). I’ll call for a minor upset with UAB.

Opinion on Oregon St vs. Utah. Anybobdy seen it?

College Football
Pittsburgh/South Florida Over 51
When you bet on Pittsburgh you never know which Panthers team will show up. This is the most unpredictable team to bet on in the nation so hopefully tonight they continue that trend and give USF a game. South Florida is one of those schools that need to win and win big for style points. This team knows that even if they run the table they would need a lot of outside help. Pittsburgh allowed a ton of points to Syracuse and will have no answer for South Florida. When the Bulls are on defense they will be without two starters one being George Selvie who is the heart of the defense. Without that leadership I expect Pitt to score more. Look for both teams to score enough to push this over the total.
