Well, I have played poker for a quite a few years but am just an average amateur.
A few months ago, I decided to really see if I could improve my game. I started playing no limit cash games and found that really helped me play better as I was way more careful in what I played. I think I am a better tournament player and my first goal was to consistently finish in the top 10%. I have accomplished that goal as well. That is helping me get close to/make some final tables.
There is a poker league in town and I joined it as it offers monthly tournaments at a local casino and it is great competition. They are starting a masters series that will run for 12 weeks and will really put the skills to a test.
Just want everyone to know that if you make the effort, your game can really improve so go for it. I also play at Raise & Fold when I play online and recommend it to others. The online game helps fit in the number of hands needed to stay on top of things until I get to the poker room.
No one may care but I just felt like posting this.

Poorboy,

As an avid poker player, at some parts of my life for a living as well.... What is your true goal?

Have you set an amount of $ you want to win daily, weekly, hourly?

Getting better at poker is a good start but without a strong game plan monetarily wise, you could be the best player ever and have no money.

Good post, we need more like it.

Freak, you bring up great points.
I don't think I would ever play to make a living off of it. I think there are a couple reasons for that. One is that I think it would take more time to invest in live games than I realistically have. Also, I do not know if I have the stamina for it if I had to play to 'survive', as well as the bankroll behind me.
I guess I will be a recreational player for a few years yet until I have time to commit to it seriously. I enjoy the game, the social aspect, the tactical/strategic aspect, the reading of others, the calculation etc.
I have only ever set 'session goals' when I go play based on how much time I think I have. But if I was honest, I do not always stick to them. I also do not know what realistic goals are, I will have to read up on that. I also adjust it based on what table I am it. If I am playing at the 'main' table where the better players are it is different than if I get there and they are opening a new table for a lot of 'newer' players or just players I perceive I can make money off of. I kind of know the limits of my game and if I am in over mt head and adjust accordingly.
So, in the end, I realize I better research and think more about my goals because you are right that a strong game plan is needed.

Well I will say this playing live compared to online are two different things. You can play 2-4x as many hands per hour online than you can live and toss in that you can multi-table online you can make a decent living playing poker.

You don't need to play big $ online to make a living. A good 3-6 5-10 fixed game regiment and you can do well. The key is to set daily goals of how much you want to make and what your return per hour is. Some people scoff at the idea that they wasted an hour of time and only made $20. Well to me if you could make $20 an hour tax free and be at home doing it. That's not bad at all.

You control how long you play, how much you play for and all the while you're at home and have all the luxuries.

That's the kind of goal you want to have... set it, when you get to it stop and go back later. You might win that $20 goal in the first hand. You might play 30 minutes, you might not win $20 in an hour and make it up the next. Without goals and a purpose, then you're right.... you are playing socially. I can guarantee you the other players aren't and you're the mark.
