Saturday's $300,000 Ruffian H. (G1) at Belmont Park is virtually the first clash of the generations among the filly and mare set this season. The 1 1/16-mile contest marks the debut of champion INDIAN BLESSING (Indian Charlie) and Grade 1 heroine LITTLE BELLE (A.P. Indy), both three, against a good group of older fillies and mares. We feel, however, that the edge goes to the latter and predict they will garner the top three slots.

Arguably the most talented of those four and up is SPRING WALTZ (Silver Charm), who developed into an exciting divisional prospect with a knockout victory in the Rampart H. (G2) last March. The seemingly fragile mare has raced only once since then, finishing fourth in the 1 1/4-mile Delaware H. (G2), a race where she was probably short of conditioning. She enters the Ruffian off another layoff, but has been race ready for the past month having been entered and scratched from both the Go for Wand H. (G1) and Personal Ensign S. (G1). A return to the form she displayed at Gulfstream last winter would make her difficult to beat.

Grade 1 winner TOUGH TIZ'S SIS (Tiznow) has generally been a creature of synthetic surfaces, but has fared well on dirt at times. She shipped to Belmont last fall to compete in the Gazelle S. (G1) alongside classic winner Rags to Riches and eventual winner Lear's Princess (Lear Fan), falling short by 2 1/2 lengths after pressing the pace. More recently, she put the undefeated Zenyatta (Street Cry [Ire]) to the test in the Vanity H. (G1), losing to that rival by a half-length, but that margin grew to 6 1/4 lengths when they faced each other in the Clement L. Hirsch H. (G2). Battle-tested against the best fillies over the past two years, it's hard not to take this one seriously.

With the exception of her last start, RITE MOMENT (Vicar) has been very consistent this year. After notching the Distaff H. (G2) and Bed o' Roses H. (G2), she was the beaten favorite when second in the Shuvee H. (G2) and third in First Flight H. (G2), then trailed throughout in last month's Honorable Miss H. (G2) after a slow start. She is a capable of better, and the strong possibility of rain due to Tropical Storm Hanna would help this filly who owns an excellent 4-3-0-1 mark on wet tracks.

Sophomore Indian Blessing figures to be a strong favorite with her 9-7-2-0 mark and dominating scores in the Test S. (G1) and Prioress S. (G1) in her last two. Though not her best distance, she is well-versed at 1 1/16 miles, and doing it around one turn at Belmont plays to her strengths. Nonetheless, she might find herself reverting to her front-running ways while stretching out from seven furlongs, and that might work against her at this trip. She also hasn't faced a field this talented in awhile.

MIRACULOUS MISS (Mr. Greeley) has been a hard-luck horse the past two seasons, rallying far too late to get the job done in many of the top filly and mare sprints. Winner of the one-mile Comely S. (G2) two years ago, her only attempt at this distance occurred in the two-turn Cotillion H. (G2) at Philadelphia Park where she finished fourth. This one-turn race should suit her better, but she might not get the extraordinarily fast pace she needs. Her wet track mark of 5-0-1-1 also leaves much to be desired.

Little Belle should benefit cutting back from 1 1/4 miles, but we wonder if the Ashland S. (G1) victor is too far down the pecking order of three-year-old fillies to make a race of it against her elders. Keep in mind that she wintered at Aqueduct last year, earned her top-level victory on Polytrack, and hasn't been closer than 4 1/2 lengths since then.

COPPER STATE (Jump Start), runner-up in both the Go for Wand and Obeah S. (G3), could be a live longshot for the exotics having been sent away at 16-1 and 13-1 in those races. We're not quite convinced the Illinois-bred can upset this field, though. Multiple Grade 2 winner BOCA GRANDE (A.P. Indy) should improve off of a runner-up placing in an allowance/optional claimer at Saratoga in her first start in more than nine months, but she's struggled against relatively undistinguished company in the past and we just don't see her being a top-level runner. STAGE LUCK (Unbridled's Song) is a minor stakes winner who has not raced since March 29.

Saturday's $250,000 Garden City S. (G1) features a terrific group of eight turf fillies, plus two main-track-only entrants. With the approach of Tropical Storm, or possibly Hurricane, Hanna, Belmont Park figures to get a fair amount of rain, and the inner turf will probably have a bit of give to it. Several of these sophomores are proven on soft ground, but we'll give the edge to MY PRINCESS JESS (Stormy Atlantic) as the best value pick at 4-1 on the morning line. Never worse than second in her seven-race career, the Barclay Tagg trainee is riding a three-stakes winning streak. While the dark bay has been impressive in different ways in each of those races, we were especially taken with her no-holds-barred attitude in the Lake George S. (G2) on soft turf at Saratoga last time out. My Princess Jess was caught in traffic, but muscled her way through to win as much the best. She is bred to relish the added ground in this 1 1/8-mile test, and we expect a stalk-and-pounce trip beneath a returning Eibar Coa.

ARIEGE (Doneraile Court) is coupled in the wagering with PURE CLAN (Pure Prize), and the IEAH Stables duo rank as the 2-1 morning-line favorites. As highly as we think of Pure Clan, whose gritty American Oaks Invitational (G1) score extended her turf mark to four-for-four, all of her form is on firm ground. In contrast, Ariege has credentials on the rain-soaked sod, so we believe that she's likely to rescue the fortunes of the entry. The winner of the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) and Beaumont S. (G2) on synthetic surfaces earlier this year, Ariege returned from a four-month layoff to capture the Madame Jumel S. at the Spa by 2 1/4 commanding lengths. The Bobby Frankel filly is eligible to move forward off that prep, making her a serious threat from off the pace with Alan Garcia.

For much of the year, BACKSEAT RHYTHM (El Corredor) had the look of a talented filly who had not quite put it all together. The Patrick Reynolds pupil shattered that reputation by virtue of a stunning 3 1/4-length score in the Lake Placid S. (G2) most recently. Displaying a powerful burst of speed, Backseat Rhythm rolled from well back to impose her authority on the yielding ground. A repeat of that effort would make her difficult to beat, but that may be the rub: she's facing a deeper field on roughly three weeks' rest. Although we wouldn't be surprised if she copes admirably, we're a bit cautious. If the Garden City is transferred to the main track, note her placings in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Frizette S. (G1).

Appalachian S. (G3) queen ALWAJEEHA (Dixieland Band) is coming off a valiant runner-up effort to My Princess Jess in the Lake George. Like Backseat Rhythm on the eve of the Lake Placid, Alwajeeha is probably better than we've seen so far, and capable of upsetting the apple cart with improvement. On the plus side, the Shadwell filly has been training sharply for Kiaran McLaughlin. On the other hand, she may have preferred a firmer turf course. RAW SILK (Malibu Moon) could be dangerous as the lone speed in this spot. She ran a useful field, including Alwajeeha, off their feet in similar conditions in the Sands Point S. (G2) three back on this same course. The Darley Stable colorbearer has been unable to build on that when fading in both the American Oaks and Lake Placid, but she is likely to get away with an easier lead here.

We may be selling Pure Clan short in this spot, for it's anyone's guess whether she'll handle give in the ground. If she resembles most of her Storm Cat tribe, she may be compromised. That uncertainty, coupled with the fact that horseman Bob Holthus skipped the August 16 Del Mar Oaks (G1) because Pure Clan was so tired after the American Oaks, makes us hesitant. American Oaks runner-up SATAN'S CIRCUS (Gone West) may wish that she'd passed on the Del Mar Oaks, where she wound up a disappointing fourth. The French listed winner loves the soft going, but a cross-country foray, on the heels of a subpar effort, lead us to wonder whether she may be in for a downward form cycle. English shipper SHAKER (Ire) (Key of Luck) has been beaten in listed company and does not have the class of last year's successful raider, Alexander Tango (Ire).

Should Hanna rain the Garden City off the turf, multiple Grade 1 victress COUNTRY STAR (Empire Maker) would have a say in the outcome. She's reportedly in better shape than she was when sixth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), her only previous attempt in the slop. The other main-track-only hopeful, recent allowance winner SENIOR RITA LADY (Fusaichi Pegasus), appears to be fishing for Grade 1 black-type.

A contentious group of 13 sophomore fillies will come to grips in the $200,000 Pucker Up S. (G3) at Arlington Park on Saturday. A fast pace, or at the least an honest one, should be in the offing, setting it up beautifully for MUCH OBLIGED (Kingmambo). The Malcolm Pierce pupil is already a winner over this turf course, having captured the inaugural American One Thousand Guineas in May. She again demonstrated the ability to make a huge move from the tail of the field in the Boiling Springs S. (G3) at Monmouth, where she came within a neck of catching My Princess Jess (Stormy Atlantic). We're drawing the proverbial line through her most recent outing in the Lake Placid S. (G2) for three reasons: a wide trip, yielding ground and an uncharacteristically forward early position. With Chris Emigh back aboard for the first time since the Boiling Springs, Much Obliged promises to revert to her true form at a generous 6-1 on the morning line.

The Todd Pletcher-trained LUCKY COPY (Unbridled's Song) is coming off a smashing, wire-to-wire score in the second division of the Hatoof S. here. She set blistering fractions that day, opening up by as many as eight lengths, before holding on to a 2 3/4-length margin at the wire. She could face more pace pressure in this spot, but then again, she may simply have too much speed to be eyeballed early. Although Lucky Copy could be vulnerable over the extra half-furlong in this grassy 1 1/8-mile affair, she'll still be the one they all have to catch in the stretch. Note that Garrett Gomez returns to the saddle, guaranteeing that her 10-1 morning-line price will be very short-lived.

California shipper BEL AIR SIZZLE (Unusual Heat) will be among those coming from the clouds late. The Barry Abrams filly usually gives a good account of herself, as illustrated most recently by her runner-up effort in the Del Mar Oaks (G1). Bel Air Sizzle could enjoy the more expansive contours of Arlington, but she strikes us as the type of closer who tends to come too late, regardless. As such, the early favorite smacks of an underlay at 3-1. We'll oppose her on top without throwing her out entirely.

We're having a hard time separating the Tom Proctor pair of TIGHT PRECISION (Pure Precision) and CLOSEOUT (Repriced). Tight Precision finished second to Lucky Copy last time out while making her turf debut, and she may well improve in her second try on the lawn, especially with new rider Russell Baze. Closeout was a stylish winner of the Audubon Oaks two back, and a troubled runner-up to Grade 1 star Ariege (Doneraile Court) in the Madame Jumel S. at Saratoga in her latest. Tight Precision should offer more value, and she also figures to get the jump on the deep-closing Closeout.

DREAMING OF LIZ (El Prado [Ire]) is accomplished on the Polytrack, but judging by her sixth-place finish in the American One Thousand Guineas, maybe not so enamored of the turf. She will not get away with dictating up front either, and must decide whether to hook Lucky Copy early, or try to stalk. While the Frank Calabrese homebred merits respect on the basis of her class, we're not convinced that she can emulate her stablemate, champion Dreaming of Anna (Rahy), who won the Pucker Up last year. RETURN TO PARADISE (El Prado [Ire]) landed the much slower division of the Hatoof and looks up against it from post 13.

MUSHKA (Empire Maker) has failed to live up to her dazzling juvenile form in her two starts this season. Pitching her back onto the turf could wake her up, or it may equally turn out to be a last chance stab in the dark. As foolish as it may be to dismiss Bill Mott and Rene Douglas, we'll just watch how this plays out. JAZZ JAM (GB) (Pivotal) has been largely disappointing on the English turf as a sophomore, with her lone victory coming in the Masaka S. on the Polytrack. If she weren't with Paul Cole, we'd think that she was curiously spotted here. CLEAR POND (Dynaformer) is exiting a course-and-distance allowance win in grand style for Rusty Arnold. The well-bred dark bay is an unknown quantity at this level, and we prefer to monitor her stakes debut before endorsing.

There is little reason to suppose that the one-for-13 NIJINSKY BALLET (Rahy) can conjure up a form reversal. APPLE MARTINI (Giant's Causeway) appears to be marginally better on Polytrack, and her turf record suggests that she is not good enough to threaten. GONE THEATRICAL (Theatrical [Ire]) would need to step up dramatically from her half-length allowance score to make her presence felt among these.

Saturday's $200,000 Endine H. (G3) marks the stakes debut for ELOPE (Gone West), an impressive 11 3/4-length allowance winner last time out at Saratoga. She faces a serious class check in only her third lifetime start, but there isn't much speed lined up for this six-furlong event and the four-year-old filly should enjoy a perfect trip on the front end. The Bruce Levine trainee earned a 108 BRIS Speed rating last time, and Delaware Park's leading rider, Ramon Dominguez, will be in the saddle.

GRAEME SIX (Graeme Hall) is the 5-2 choice on the morning line, and the Grade 3-winning chestnut could prove difficult to withstand. However, the Tom Amoss runner adds five pounds (123) off a third-place effort in the Honorable Miss H. (G2) and has shown the willingness to settle for a minor award in the past. We're concerned that she'll leave herself with too much to do in the stretch and will tab her for runner-up honors.

SWEET HOPE (Lemon Drop Kid) exits a runner-up finish in the Test S. (G1) for Larry Jones, and the improving three-year-old filly will make her first start against her elders in this spot. While we haven't seen enough yet to recommend her chances for the win, we will use the promising filly in the top three. Sweet Hope has shown an affinity for the track, registering a 104 Speed rating for her three-length score in the Beautiful Day S. two starts back.

HUNGARIAN BOATBABY (Silver Ghost) is a six-furlong specialist who likes Delaware. The Tony Dutrow runner has captured four of her last five starts, and she's earned a couple of century-topping Speed numbers in the process. We'll use her in some exotics.

MY SISTER SUE (Broken Vow) is a hard-knocking mare, but she's winless in seven starts so far this year and will be stepping up in company off a third-place finish. One advantage she has, though, is early speed. She's hit the board in her last five starts and will try to hold for another minor award on Saturday. CASH'S GIRL (Northern Afleet) is three-for-three at Delaware, getting up to win the six-furlong Sweet and Sassy S. most recently, and the Tim Ritchey charge looms as a dangerous late threat here. We won't be surprised to see her get involved late, but the pace scenario doesn't appear to favor her. She still deserves consideration for the exotics.

TICKET TO SEATTLE (Capote) defeated a soft group of rivals last time. We didn't like her first two starts this year and will just watch to see how she handles the class hike. HADAVISION (Vision and Verse) is one-for-one over the track, winning the six-furlong Peach Blossom S. in April, but her recent form is discouraging. BEDSIDE STORY (Tale of the Cat) was claimed for $40,000 from a third-place finish last time. She appears overmatched.

Thirteen juvenile fillies will settle Saturday's $150,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie S. (G3), and eight made their last start over the Polytrack in Chicago. However, we like a pair of shippers -- C. S. SILK (Medaglia d'Oro) and PRETTY PROLIFIC (Lion Heart) -- and will give a slight advantage to the former.

Trained by Dale Romans, C. S. Silk was bet down in her debut at Churchill Downs two starts back but could do no better than third behind a couple of nice rivals, with the winner coming back to finish second in the Debutante S. (G3) and the runner-up easily capturing her next outing. C. S. Silk moved forward off the experience, decimating a solid group of maiden special weight rivals with a 6 1/4-length decision under the Twin Spires, and the dark bay miss earned commendable BRIS Speed and Pace numbers for her effort. The runner-up returned to win her next start, and C. S. Silk has trained forwardly since then, recording bullets in preparation for this appearance. The Kentucky-bred owns a strong turn of foot, and we'll look for her to prove best at nice odds under Robby Albarado.

Pretty Prolific rolled to a smart 3 1/2-length decision in her debut at Churchill in June and then finished third in the Adirondack S. (G2) last time out. The winner, Mani Bhavan (Storm Boot), returned to win the Spinaway S. (G1) in her next start, and Pretty Prolific will receive some class relief in this spot. She worked five furlongs in a bullet last weekend in preparation for this start, and the James Baker trainee has a 94 BRIS Speed rating to her credit. Pretty Prolific picks up the services of the hot-riding Rafael Bejarano and will be no surprise in the winner's circle.

REINE DES COEURS (Lion Heart) probably didn't beat much when upsetting maiden special weight rivals at 31-1 last time, but we loved the way she finished and respect her chances for a minor award on Saturday. She'll certainly be tested for class, but the added ground will likely benefit her and the price should be right on the tote board. The David Hinsley pupil will receive first-time Lasix and should be closing late under Inez Karlsson.

PRIDE (Lion Heart) came up short as the 6-5 favorite behind RAVIN MANIAC (Scrimshaw) in an allowance/optional claiming event at Arlington last out, but she didn't enjoy the cleanest trip that afternoon and is eligible to show more here. The Todd Pletcher-trained chestnut will receive a positive rider switch to Garrett Gomez, and she's well-drawn in post 4. Pride deserves serious consideration for the top three.

Pletcher will saddle three uncoupled runners, and PHOLA (Johannesburg) is the least experienced of the trio. She did graduate last time in fine fashion, drawing clear to a 4 1/4-length score in a one-mile maiden special weight event over the Polytrack, and looms a threat to carry that form forward on Saturday. Leading rider Rene Douglas has the mount, and Phola figures to be running late.

QUITE THE LADY (Pleasantly Perfect) also represents the Pletcher stable, and the dark bay has made both career starts at Arlington, breaking her maiden at first asking prior to a third versus allowance/optional claiming rivals. She's eligible to improve off her last effort, and Quite the Lady is another to consider for the exotics.

Ravin Maniac exits a hard-fought allowance/optional claiming victory, but we're concerned that she will regress of that effort while stepping up to face better rivals from post 13. BROADWAY HENNESSEY (Hennessy) exits a stakes win at Santa Rosa, but she earned only a 77 Speed rating for the effort. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee ranks first in BRIS Prime Power, but we'll try to beat her over the Polytrack.

NEVER LIE (Alke) exits a turf maiden special weight score for Rusty Arnold. She didn't run very well in her lone appearance over Polytrack two starts back, and we'll just watch to see how she fares here. AFLEET DECEIT (Northern Afleet) faces an ambitious class hike after finishing second last time in her career debut. We can't recommend her chances.

WIND CAPER (Touch Gold) ships in off a debut maiden score at Presque Isle Downs and will make her first start for Richard Scherer. We'll look for this to serve as a learning experience. MAMMA LINA (Langfuhr) rolled to a 14-length debut maiden score last time, but it came at the expense of Illinois-breds. She faces a much steeper grade of competition at this level. TIMELESS MISS (Cape Canaveral) also faces a steep class hike off a maiden win over Illinois-bred rivals.

Long-winded equines hoping to get an automatic bid for the inaugural Breeders' Cup Marathon on October 25 have had two opportunities already (the Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park and Cougar II H. at Del Mar), and Saturday's $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship (G3) is their last. The choice in the 12-furlong heat is JADE'S REVENGE (Quiet American), who has compiled a stellar record of accomplishment on Polytrack.

Debuting on the synthetic surface in March 2007, Jade's Revenge came from 20 lengths back to win the Tejano Run S. at Turfway by 1 3/4 lengths, then upset the Ben Ali S. (G3) at Keeneland at odds of 26-1. He finished last of seven in his next start and did not reappear until this past February. The beaten favorite in his first two starts of the year, he finally awoke in the 13-furlong Fort Harrod S. at Keeneland, winning comfortably by 3 3/4 lengths. Most recently, he shipped west to Hollywood Park and finished second to Big Booster (Accelerator) in the Gallant Man H. Positional speed has played an important role in his most lucrative victories, and we expect the Graham Motion charge to be prominent throughout.

TELLING (A.P. Indy), a veteran of only eight starts, placed in both the Starts and Stripes Turf H. (G3) and Rossi Gold S. on grass at Arlington in his last two, which followed extremely good form over the Oaklawn dirt last winter. This marks his second attempt on Polytrack as he was third in his debut over the surface last year behind Base Commander (Officer), who narrowly lost the Kentucky Cup Sprint (G3) later on.

DOMINICAN (El Corredor) is best remembered for upsetting Street Sense in the Blue Grass S. (G1) last year, the first time the historic Kentucky Derby (G1) prep was contested on Polytrack. While he has not distinguished himself on any surface since then, he did get a confidence-boosting allowance victory at Presque Isle last time, and his victory in the Rushaway S. here last year can not be taken lightly.

STAR PLUS (Arg) (Alpha Plus), a top-level runner in his native Argentina, has been unplaced in both U.S. starts, but showed gradual improvement in the latter against a tough field. Versatile as far as surface, there's a chance he might take to a synthetic surface in his first attempt. The same can also be said about Venezuelan star TACONEO (Ven) (Water Poet [Ire]), who displayed progressive form in the John's Call S. at Saratoga most recently.

A. P. XCELLENT (A.P. Indy) figures to get loads of support, mostly on his 2007 form where he finished third in the Californian S. (G2) and a nose second in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1). He's had a mixed record since then, however, and he's beaten just one horse in his last two starts. We feel he is a bit of a risk at underlaid odds.

Grade 2 winner DELIGHTFUL KISS (Kissin Kris) has been a serious disappointment this year, placing only once in four starts. Unable to contend in a recent listed stakes and unproven on Polytrack, we'll let him beat us in this spot. CANELA (El Corredor), claimed for $40,000 just four starts ago, seems more capable on turf, where he is five-for-10, than synthetic, where he boasts an 8-1-2-1 mark. STORM THE CASTLE (Smart Strike) is here because he freaked in an off-the-turf maiden by 21 lengths over Woodbine's Polytrack on August 9. Convincing as that victory was, others appear more likely. Poor TRES COPAS (Northern Spur [Ire]), on the other hand, doesn't even have a maiden win to his credit. We're not quite sure what he's doing here.
