Kentucky Oaks (G1) queen PROUD SPELL (Proud Citizen) will be seeking her second Grade 1 victory when taking on five rivals in Saturday's $600,000 Alabama S. (G1) at Saratoga. The Larry Jones trainee showed brilliance as a juvenile, taking the Matron S. (G2) before running second to Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie) in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). She continued to run against that rival in the beginning of her sophomore campaign, registering a runner-up effort in the Silverbulletday S. (G3) before finally getting the best of Indian Blessing in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). Proud Spell did not like Keeneland's Polytrack when going in the Ashland S. (G1) but still gutted out a third-place finish, and returned to the winner's circle with a dominating five-length score in the Kentucky Oaks.

Proud Spell suffered a horrible trip in the Mother Goose S. (G1), crossing under the wire in second before being disqualified to third, and returned to the barn a bit scratched and battered. The bay lass recovered quickly, though, and was sent to the gate just two weeks later to score in the Delaware Oaks (G2) most recently. Regular rider Gabriel Saez will be in the saddle, and the pair could get the job done in this 1 1/4-mile test.

MUSIC NOTE (A.P. Indy) has been unbeatable since breaking her maiden in her second career start and will probably go off favored in this spot. The bay filly began her career with Tom Albertrani but was transferred to Godolphin and trainer Saeed bin Suroor after a 7 1/4-length maiden victory last November. Since then, Music Note has dominated her rivals, recording a seven-length allowance win, taking the Mother Goose by 3 1/2 lengths and trouncing her competition in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) by 11 lengths last out. Her numbers have been excellent as well, as she earned a 113 BRIS Speed rating for her CCA Oaks victory. Javier Castellano has been aboard for all of Music Note's wins and will attempt to keep their perfect record going.

LITTLE BELLE (A.P. Indy) and Music Note are coupled in the wagering due to common ownership and trainer. The three-year-old miss earned her shot in the Kentucky Oaks when taking the Ashland, and was best of the rest when running second in the Kentucky Derby (G1) counterpart. That was her final start for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin as bin Suroor took over in time for her to finish second in the CCA Oaks last out. The bay will be looking to turn the tables on both Proud Spell and Music Note, and has the talent to do just that. Rajiv Maragh has been in the irons for all but one start and will take up the reins once again here.

While the top three have each other's measure, SWEET VENDETTA (Stephen Got Even) could be the wild card in the Alabama. The Gary Contessa charge did face Little Belle in the Busher S. after breaking her maiden earlier this season, running second on that occasion, and has since captured the Andover Way S. and Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2). She earned a 102 Speed figure for that last one and could surprise in the top three with Ramon Dominguez picking up the mount.

There was a buzz surrounding MUSHKA (Empire Maker) last year after the Bill Mott trainee delivered a 4 1/2-length victory in the Demoiselle S. (G2). She was considered a contender for the Kentucky Oaks earlier this season, but was ruled out of consideration for that race and didn't reappear until July 25, running third in an allowance/optional claimer at Saratoga. The dark bay lass probably needed that race following the eight-month layoff and could fill out the bottom of the gimmicks in this spot.

SKYLIGHTER (Sky Mesa) looks way in over her head here, but the Bobby Frankel charge will pick up a check even if she finishes last.

1st-PROUD SPELL

3rd-LITTLE BELLE

SWORD DANCER INVITATIONAL S. (G1), 8TH-SAR, $500,000, 3YO/UP, 1 1/2MT, 4:56 P.M. EDT, 8-16

6 BETTER TALK NOW MOTION H GRAHAM DOMINGUEZ R A 120
7 DANCING FOREVER MCGAUGHEY CLAUDE III DOUGLAS R R 123
8 CHAMPS ELYSEES (GB) FRANKEL ROBERT J PRADO E S 118

Saturday's $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational (G1) attracted a solid group of eight, but a couple of horses aren't expected to start. RED ROCKS (Ire) (Galileo [Ire]) is definitely out due to an injury, and Bobby Frankel has indicated that he will scratch CHAMPS ELYSEES (GB) (Danehill). The turf will likely have some give to it.

DANCING FOREVER (Rahy) has handled off turf in the past, winning the Our Dear Peg S. last December over "good" ground and finishing second in a tough allowance last fall over yielding ground, and the five-year-old has really come on this season for Shug McGaughey. He just missed by a neck when opening his 2008 campaign with a second in the Gulfstream Park Turf S. (G1) and followed it with a smart score in the Elkhorn S. (G2) at this 1 1/2-mile distance. Last time out, Dancing Forever rallied boldly through the stretch to win the Manhattan S. (G1) by a nose, earning a triple-digit BRIS Speed rating for the score, and his Speed and Late Pace numbers are very strong. We'll look for him to run another big race here from off the pace.

BETTER TALK NOW (Talkin Man), winner of the 2004 edition of the Sword Dancer, would relish off turf. He closed well for third-place honors last time in the Man o' War S. (G1), finishing a half-length back of Horse of the Year Curlin (Smart Strike) over firm ground, and that was the nine-year-old's best outing this season from four starts. The gelding appears to be rounding back into form for conditioner Graham Motion, and Better Talk Now is a threat to run past all of his rivals in the stretch.

PRESIOUS PASSION (Royal Anthem) led wire to wire over yielding ground in the United Nations S. (G1) two back and could wind up the lone speed in this spot. He'll be facing a tough task class-wise against our top two picks, but we respect the five-year-old gelding's penchant for upsets. His off-the-pace effort in the Oceanport S. (G3) is probably a throw out, and Presious Passion is eligible to rebound with an improved showing on the front end here.

EQUITABLE (A.P. Indy) is making progress for Bill Mott, finishing third in the United Nations last time in his graded debut, and figures to be rallying late under Kent Desormeaux on Saturday. The four-year-old has hit the board in seven of eight lifetime starts, breaking his maiden last year at Saratoga, and the chestnut could land a top three placing here with further improvement.

Defending champ GRAND COUTURIER (GB) (Grand Lodge) upset eventual champion English Channel when winning this event last year, but we're willing to take a stand against him on this occasion. He hasn't shown a lot in two outings so far this season, and the five-year-old is too inconsistent for us to back him with any confidence.

INTERPATATION (Langfuhr) is winless from three starts over the course and probably needs an easier spot to be effective.

Champs Elysees will merit top three consideration if he actually starts, but we'll still go him against based on his last couple of disappointing efforts.

1st-DANCING FOREVER
2nd-BETTER TALK NOW
3rd-PRESIOUS PASSION

10 MILLION DOLLAR RUN POLANCO MARCELO BAZE T C 122

Even without the presence of American Oaks Invitational (G1) winner Pure Clan (Pure Prize), Saturday's $350,000 Del Mar Oaks (G1) has attracted a talent-laden field of 10 three-year-old fillies. Logic dictates to us that SATAN'S CIRCUS (Gone West), who finished less than a length in second behind Pure Clan in the American Oaks, is the one to beat in her second U.S. start.

A listed stakes winner in her penultimate start in France, Satan's Circus later finished fifth in the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) (Fr-G1), seven lengths behind Zarkava (Zamindar), now considered one of the favorites for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1). Placing third in that race was Goldikova (Anabaa), who recently defeated her elders in the Prix Rothschild (Fr-G1), so Satan's Circus was certainly battle-tested against top company prior to her importation for the American Oaks. Tracking less than three lengths behind the leaders for the opening mile, Satan's Circus closed the gap in the stretch and wound up missing by three-quarters of a length at odds of 14-1. The price obviously will be quite low this time, but a combination of back class and her versatility at various distances leads us in her direction.

A more recent arrival on our shores is OCEANE MUSIC (Fr) (Ocean of Wisdom), who is an undefeated winner of all three starts including a listed event last out at Deauville. Though there were no apparent standouts behind her in any of her victories, we respect the edge Europeans in general have over American-based runners on the turf. Her running style suggests she will be up near the pace, and trying 1 1/8 miles for the first does not bother us as she her broodmare sire is Le Glorieux (GB), who proved himself over 1 1/4 miles in the Washington D.C. International (G1) and over 1 1/2 miles in the Japan Cup (Jpn-G1). Trainer John Shirreffs and jockey Mike Smith are also a potent combo.

STORM MESA (Sky Mesa) is the hot horse having won her last five, including the San Clemente H. (G2) last out in her turf debut. She was fairly impressive coming through in that prep at nearly 8-1, but value is likely to plummet this time and it would be a surprise if the quick pace she saw in the San Clemente were replicated here. Indeed, she might find herself much closer to the lead here, which was rather common prior to her last start.

The speedy MISTY OCEAN (Stormy Atlantic) got caught up in the San Clemente duel and actually did well to lose by only 1 1/2 lengths. A less pressured tempo might enable her to last longer, as was the case in her victory in the Honeymoon H. (G2) two starts ago. MISSIT (Ire) (Orpen) has lacked an effective closing kick in her three starts since taking the Providencia S. (G2), and might simply be a cut below the best in her division in California. The same concerns also apply to BEL AIR SIZZLE (Unusual Heat), a deep closer who conceded too much ground and position in both the San Clemente and American Oaks. She is, however, worth a spot in exotics plans in the event she breaks more alertly.

MAGICAL FANTASY (Diesis [GB]) wasn't beaten by much in either the Honeymoon or American Oaks, but was not a threat to win either and will have to improve to pull off the upset. The lightly-raced MILLION DOLLAR RUN (Tejano Run) broke her maiden in the Railbird S. (G3) in her second career start, and most recently won her turf debut over first-level allowance/optional claiming company. Both she and GINGER POP (El Prado [Ire]), runner-up in the Flawlessly S. last time, are taking a significant step up in class. The ultra-talented LETHAL HEAT (Unusual Heat) will be making her third start of the meet and is a graded winner sprinting and routing, but seems best at doing the former over a synthetic surface.

1st-1st-SATAN'S CIRCUS
2nd-OCEANE MUSIC (Fr)
3rd-STORM MESA

8 GRASSHOPPER HOWARD NEIL J ALBARADO R J 121
9 SHOPTON LANE LEVINE BRUCE LEZCANO JOSE 117

GOTTCHA GOLD (Coronado's Quest) never fired when finishing fourth in the Skip Away S. last out, and we're surprised to see him wheel back off a 21-day layoff in Saturday's $300,000 Philip H. Iselin S. (G3). The defending champion will have company on the front end with SHOPTON LANE (Quiet American) and ACTIN GOOD (Yes It's True) in the line-up, and we'll try to beat the potential favorite with HONEST MAN (Unbridled's Song).

Conditioned by Larry Jones, Honest Man brings improving form into this 1 1/8-mile event. He's registered BRIS Speed ratings of 100, 104 and 102 in his last three starts, respectively, and the four-year-old colt exits a solid third in his graded debut, the Salvator Mile S. (G3). The Kentucky-bred owns a winning attitude with five wins in his last seven starts, and he figures to sit a perfect stalking trip under Terry Thompson before pouncing.

Gottcha Gold remains the one to beat in this event, but the five-year-old seems to perform best when fresh and it's difficult to believe that he'll be making his third start in six weeks. Throw in the fact that he's failed to deliver his best while dropping his last two starts at short odds, and the bay appears to be in a negative form cycle. He'll get a jockey switch to Elvis Trujillo and doesn't need the lead to be effective, but he'll still be close to what could be a taxing pace.

KISS THE KID (Lemon Drop Kid) owns a solid 4-2-0-1 mark over Monmouth's main track and is two-for-two overall on a wet track, which looms as a possibility on Saturday. The Amy Tarrant trainee exits a solid runner-up effort on turf, and he's faced good company all season. We can't dismiss him from win consideration.

CUBA (Not for Love) exits a nice score over New Jersey-breds and has produced a very solid 8-6-1-1 mark this season for trainer Robert Dibona. This class hike looks tough, but the seven-year-old has a shot to close for a minor award.

Shopton Lane owns good present form, but the outside post and other speed in the field give us cause for concern. GRASSHOPPER (Dixie Union) finished a well-beaten third in the Whitney H. (G1) last out and hasn't lived up to the promise that he showed when finishing second in the Travers S. (G1) last year. The four-year-old did manage to capture a Grade 3 earlier this season, but the dark bay has failed as the favorite repeatedly and proven apt to throw in a clunker. We'll let him beat us.

PLEASANT STRIKE (Smart Strike) rolled to a 10-length score in an off-the-turf event at Colonial Downs last time, but the Grade 3 winner will take a significant step up in class in this spot. Todd Pletcher is experimenting with the proven grass runner, and we'll just watch to see how he handles it. Actin Good figures to show speed off the layoff and would like a wet track, but he'll probably face too much pressure. FIVE STEPS (Yarrow Brae) has won five of his last six starts, but he's never raced at Monmouth and faces a difficult task against graded rivals.

1st-HONEST MAN
2nd-GOTTCHA GOLD
3rd-KISS THE KID

GARDENIA H. (G3), 11TH-ELP, $150,000, 3YO/UP, F/M, 1M, 5:34 P.M. EDT, 8-16

7 WINDYINDY NAFZGER CARL A BOREL C H 114

Seven distaffers will contest Saturday's $150,000 Gardenia H. (G3) at Ellis Park, and FANCY FUSAICHI (Fusaichi Pegasus) will likely go favored off an 8 3/4-length romp in the Iowa Distaff S. on June 28. We respect her chances but will take a stand against her with KATHLEENS REEL (Lemon Drop Kid).

Listed at 10-1 on the morning line, Kathleens Reel will make her first start for Eddie Kenneally, who wins at a 21 percent clip with new trainees. She didn't fire when last in the 10-furlong Delaware H. (G2) last time, but a change in scenery should do the stakes-winning filly good. The four-year-old bay has placed in both the Fleur de Lis H. (G2) and Sixty Sails H. (G3) this year, and she owns a 4-2-1-0 mark at a mile. She figures to benefit from the cutback to eight furlongs, and Kathleens Reel owns some natural speed. She can sit a favorable, ground-saving trip from the rail before offering her best.

Fancy Fusaichi merits serious respect. She'll enter this event on the upswing for Bill Mott, winning her stakes debut last time by an eye-popping margin, and the four-year-old miss clearly favors the one-mile distance. We'd like to see slightly higher BRIS Speed ratings from the up-and-coming lass, but the bay remains a major win threat in this spot.

MISS ATLANTIC (Stormy Atlantic) will show speed, but she's probably at her best sprinting around one turn. The speedy miss came up short after setting an uncontested pace in the Iowa Distaff last time, but she still managed to finish a clear second. She's eligible to hold for a small share once again, and we won't be shocked to see her lead all the way.

MARQUEE DELIVERY (Marquetry) exits an allowance win over the synthetic track at Presque Isle Downs, but she doesn't look fast enough to challenge for top honors here. However, we can't count her out of exotics consideration.

UNFORGOTTEN (Northern Afleet) exits an unplaced stakes effort on the grass at Saratoga. She's got the back class to make her presence felt here, but the Dallas Stewart pupil is winless in two starts at a mile on the main track. We question whether she's sharp enough to offer a serious challenge.

WINDYINDY (A.P. Indy) was no factor in her previous two stakes attempts against better company, and she's still got serious class concerns in this spot. SWIFT TEMPER (Giant's Causeway) hasn't shown enough in her recent starts for us to recommend her chances.

1st-KATHLEENS REEL
2nd-FANCY FUSAICHI
3rd-MISS ATLANTIC
