Louisiana Derby (G2) winner PYRO (Pulpit) worked six furlongs at Keeneland on Monday, but heavy fog prevented clockers from recording his workout. Pyro, who comes off a perplexing 10th-place effort in the Blue Grass S. (G1) on Keeneland's Polytrack, worked in company with Mr. Prospector H. (G3) winner Noonmark (Unbridled's Song).

"I was on horseback and it was so foggy that I only saw the last 50 feet of the work," trainer Steve Asmussen said of the early morning move. "But from what I saw, it looked fine."

Pyro, with exercise rider Dominic Terry aboard, was positioned inside of the Shaun Bridgmohan-ridden Noonmark, according to Asmussen. Noonmark is scheduled to make his next start in the $250,000 Churchill Downs H. (G2) on the Kentucky Derby (G1) undercard.

"When you work three-quarters (of a mile) with Noonmark, I'd call it a serious drill," Asmussen said. "Their instructions were to go in 1:14 and they usually hit their mark. Pyro seems just fine to me."

Pyro is scheduled to travel to Churchill Downs on Tuesday. Bridgmohan has the return call on both Pyro and Noonmark.

Asmussen's other Derby charge, Lecomte S. (G3) winner Z FORTUNE (Siphon [Brz]), breezed four furlongs in :50 1/5 on a fast track at Churchill Downs on Monday.
Z Fortune was timed in fractions of :13 1/5, :25 3/5 and :38 with jockey Corey Lanerie astride. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:04 1/5.

"He worked good," Lanerie said. "I was told to go in :52 and I thought we went in :52. He did it that easy."

The Zayat Stables colorbearer got hung wide on both turns before finishing determinedly for runner-up honors in the Arkansas Derby (G2) on April 12 at Oaklawn Park. Robby Albarado, who rode Z Fortune in the Arkansas Derby, has a return call for Derby 134.

Southwest S. (G3) winner DENIS OF CORK (Harlan's Holiday) worked five furlongs in a bullet 1:00 at Churchill Downs. The move was easily the fastest of 23 works at the distance.

Denis of Cork was timed in fractions of :12 4/5, :25, :37 1/5 and :48 3/5 under jockey Calvin Borel. The bay colt galloped out six furlongs in a strong 1:12 2/5 and seven furlongs in 1:26.

"I let him finish up a little bit from the quarter pole to the wire," Borel said. "I was very impressed with the last quarter of a mile -- very impressed."

The David Carroll trainee suffered his first career defeat when finishing a distant fifth in the Illinois Derby (G2) on April 5 at Hawthorne.

Carroll was ill and did not make it to Churchill Downs to witness the work by Denis of Cork, but he has been very pleased with the colt's progress in recent days and liked what Borel had to say about the move.

"He's been training good over the last four to five days," Carroll said. "Just looking at him out there, he seems to have picked it up again. I just wanted to get a nice five-eighths in him, stretch his legs, and basically let him do what he wanted to do."

Denis of Cork has $165,000 in graded stakes earnings, which may, or may not, be enough to make it into the probable 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby. His situation likely will depend on who is entered for the 1 1/4-mile classic on April 30.

Borel, who guided Denis of Cork to his first two career victories, likely would be back aboard the colt should he make into the Derby field.

Over the Hollywood Park Cushion Track, multiple stakes winner BOB BLACK JACK (Stormy Jack), most recently second in the Santa Anita Derby (G1), worked six furlongs in 1:10 4/5. With $180,000 in graded earnings, Bob Black Jack is on the cusp of drawing into the Derby field.

Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner BIG TRUCK (Hook and Ladder) breezed four furlongs in :48 4/5 on Keeneland's Polytrack on Tuesday in preparation for the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 3 at Churchill Downs. Trainer Barclay Tagg described the move as a "maintenance work." It ranked eighth out of 43 works at the distance.

"He went a little faster that I wanted, but it's fine," Tagg said. "I generally like their maintenance works to be around :49, but it's no problem."

Big Truck most recently finished 11th in the Blue Grass S. (G1) on April 12 at Keeneland. In his prior start, he defeated Atoned (Repent) in the Tampa Bay Derby. The bay colt currently ranks 20th on the Kentucky Derby graded stakes earnings list with $194,500.

Tagg's other Derby contender, Wood Memorial (G1) hero TALE OF EKATI (Tale of the Cat), is scheduled to work five furlongs at Keeneland on Wednesday.

Javier Castellano has the mount on Big Truck and Eibar Coa is slated to ride Tale of Ekati. Tagg plans to ship both colts to Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Gotham S. (G3) winner VISIONAIRE (Grand Slam), who finished a closing fifth in the Blue Grass, breezed four furlongs in :49 3/5 in company with Scenery Change (Royal Academy), a four-year-old maiden filly who was awarded the same time.

Jockey Jose Lezcano was aboard the Michael Matz trainee, who is scheduled to turn in his final work prior to the Run for the Roses on Monday at Churchill Downs.

"He just did a little maintenance work here, and then he'll do one more at Churchill," Matz said.

Visionaire currently ranks 19th on the graded earnings list with $202,500.

OBS Championship S. winner HALO NAJIB (Halo's Image) breezed four furlongs in :50 2/5 on a firm turf course at Churchill Downs. The Dale Romans trainee most recently finished seventh in the Blue Grass after a good runner-up performance in the Lane's End S. (G2) on March 22 at Turfway Park.

"I wanted to see how he would handle the grass," Romans said. "If you don't get in (the Kentucky Derby), he would go in the Crown Royal (American Turf S. [G3] on May 2). It looked like he handled if fine."

Halo Najib has $157,996 in graded stakes earnings and is on the outside looking in with respect to securing a position in the Kentucky Derby field.

TRES BORRACHOS (Ecton Park), last seen finishing third in the Arkansas Derby (G2) on April 12 at Oaklawn Park, breezed three furlongs on the main track in :35 3/5. The Beau Greeley trainee has only $118,000 in graded stakes earnings and would need many defections in order to make the field for Derby 134.

"It is not really frustrating," co-owner John Greeley said. "If a bunch drop out and we get in, fine. If not, we go on to the Preakness (S. [G1] on May 17 at Pimlico)."

The Derby is the one day of the year when it’s quite acceptable to publicly place a sports wager, whether you’re a mint julep-drinking Kentucky Colonel or a holier-than-thou sports nerd from ESPN.

For some, the Run for the Roses is all about family. On Derby Day, family tradition is to gather around the big screen for some fun, food and (hopefully) a little fund-raising.

Name uniqueness is still a key handicapping feature for the ladies and the little ones; The serious bettors consult with the sharp players who hang around the tracks and know the horsemen.

The word right now is that this year’s race could have a 20-horse field. Currently, the favorite is unbeaten Florida Derby winner Big Brown at 5/2, but the chestnut colt has had problems with his front hooves, so he might be a pass.

The favorite is followed by Louisiana Derby winner Pyro and Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John, both at 5/1.

As an even-money favorite, Pyro finished a disappointing 10th at the Blue Grass stakes on April 14. So as it sits now, I have the California colt, Colonel John, circled on my betting sheet.
