If Barry Bonds played poker instead of baseball, he would be chasing Phil Hellmuth Jr. instead of Hank Aaron.

Hellmuth set a poker world record Monday night in Las Vegas, winning his 11th World Series of Poker bracelet — the sport's equivalent of baseball's home run record.

Hellmuth was tied for all-time WSOP bracelets with poker legends Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan before winning the $1,5000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em. The tournament attracted 2,628 entries, the largest field which Hellmuth has defeated.

Brunson and Chan presented Hellmuth with the bracelet at an awards ceremony.

"This is the one I really wanted," Hellmuth said. "I have so much respect for Doyle and Johnny. To now be at the top of the all-time (WSOP wins) list is really about as good a feeling as I have ever had."

Hellmuth, 42, also made his 38th appearance at a WSOP final table, one behind all-time leader T.J. Cloutier. He won $637,254, the third highest amount Hellmuth has earned in a single tournament.

Hellmuth, who dropped out of the University of Wisconsin to pursue a poker career, won the world championship in 1989 at 24 and is the youngest player to win the WSOP's main event. His 11 WSOP wins have been in Hold'em tournaments.

"Poker players everywhere measure themselves against each other by how many WSOP bracelets they have," said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the World Series of Poker. "Now, all WSOP bracelet holders must measure themselves against Phil Hellmuth. He is a true sports champion and we could not be happier for him."

Robert Williamson III, who won the WSOP's 5,000 Buy-In Pot Limit Omaha tournament in 2002, compares winning a bracelet to winning an Olympic gold medal.

"Once you have a World Series of Poker bracelet you're a world champion," he said. "Nobody can take that away from you."

I guess the best hand does hold up from time to time then. Hellmuth is the best at getting his money in when he is ahead. Also he is very good at trapping over aggressive bettors. Not a bad guy to model your game after. Has he written any books on the subject
