Saturday's $100,000 San Bernardino H. (G3) at Santa Anita will feature the return of DYNEVER (Dynaformer), who was last seen running third in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). The Christophe Clement trainee earned a 115 BRIS Speed rating for that game effort, but might need a race off the 161-day layoff. We'll try to beat him with ENDER'S SHADOW (A.P. Indy).

Conditioned by Jenine Sahadi, Ender's Shadow captured his last one, the Tokyo City H., over the track by three lengths. The bay four-year-old took the lead from the gate and was never headed at any call, garnering 103 Speed and 110 BRIS E2 Pace ratings. That win came at a mile, but the gelding is perfect in two starts at Saturday's nine-furlong distance. If he gets away with another uncontested lead, Ender's Shadow could find himself in the winner's circle. Mick Ruis has the call.

Dynever will be coming off a major break here but posted a neck runner-up finish in the West Virginia Derby (G3) last year after taking a two-month hiatus. The dark bay four-year-old is tops in the field in BRIS Prime Power (154.8) and could take this one with a return to his sophomore form. Corey Nakatani returns to the saddle.

STAR CROSS (Arg) (Southern Halo) could improve here off an eighth-place finish in the Santa Anita H. (G1) last out. The Darrell Vienna charge came into that 10-furlong test after running second in the San Antonio H. (G2) in late January. He made his seasonal debut a winning one in the San Pasqual H. (G2), and could find this company more to his liking. Star Cross put in a sharp four-furlong move recently to prepare for this and could surprise in the top three.

CALKINS ROAD (Illinois Storm) went winless from four starts last year but has already captured his first start of 2004. The five-year-old chestnut rallied over the wet-fast track in his most recent after coming four wide into the lane and could continue to show more here with Javier Santiago aboard. Include in the exotics. KELA (Numerous) earned a 103 Speed rating for running fourth in the San Carlos H. (G2) in his six-year-old bow. He could continue to improve and threaten in the gimmicks.

TOTAL IMPACT (Chi) (Stuka) has been going well of late but hasn't won since May. We'll let him beat us. EVEN THE SCORE (Unbridled's Song) will be making his first start for trainer Vladimir Cerin in this spot. The gray horse is returning off a more than six-month layoff, last seen finishing fourth in the Kentucky Cup Classic H. (G2) in mid-September. He might need a race.
