OFFICER (Bertrando) deserves to be the odds-on favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). If he wins, we believe he should be held in higher regard than Favorite Trick, who was named Horse of the Year in 1997 after his two-year-old season. The Bob Baffert-trained two-year-old colt has been nothing short of sensational this year, winning his first five starts with consummate ease. But the question to be asked is whether or not you are willing to accept such a short price on a two-year-old who will be facing his toughest challenge to date. Officer is the one to beat, but we're going to go with CAME HOME (Gone West) for a little bit of value, and REPENT (Louis Quatorze) as our upset special.

Like Officer, Came Home is undefeated. The dark bay colt won his first start by eight lengths in :57 2/5 at Hollywood Park then came back to win the Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. (G3) in wire-to-wire fashion by four lengths, traveling the six furlong distance in 1:09 1/5. In his most recent start, Came Home dueled with another while in hand, took command midway on the turn, then drove to a two-length win in the prestigious Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga. Came Home earned a BRIS Late Pace rating of 108 in the Hopeful while completing the seven-furlong distance in a sharp 1:21 4/5. The Paco Gonzalez trainee was supposed to run in the Norfolk S. (G2) at Santa Anita on September 29, but Gonzalez had to be out of town to attend a funeral and the colt came down with some swelling in his ankle, forcing him to be scratched. Came Home breezed six furlongs seven days later on October 6 and has been training forwardly since. His six-furlong work in 1:12 3/5 at Santa Anita on October 17 was an easy breeze, and he displayed a very nice reach with his front legs. Perhaps what we like the most about Came Home is his outside post position, where he will be able to clock everyone to his inside before offering his bid. In addition, he could be anywhere from 2-1 to 4-1 in the wagering.

In his races, Officer appears to be in a common hack-canter while all the other horses are being scrubbed on or under the whip. The sensational dark bay colt won his first three starts by a combined 21 lengths. In the seven-furlong Del Mar Futurity (G2) two back, Officer stalked the leaders, moved up three wide while in hand, then inched clear under a long, loose rein. In his most recent outing, he stalked the pacesetter while well in hand, took the lead on his own turning for home, drew clear when asked and was wrapped up through the final furlong to win the 1 1/16-mile Champagne S. (G1) by 3 3/4 lengths. Officer is a beautiful, fast horse. He must, however, work out a trip from the two hole with known speedster SIPHONIC (Siphon [Brz]) on his inside and the rest of the field on his outside. Officer has already won a Grade 1 race at this distance over the track and is the logical winner, but to us, wagering on the Breeders' Cup is about finding a horse with attractive odds.

Trainer Kenny McPeek has said that his undefeated filly (Take Charge Lady [Dehere]) is nice, but Repent is something special. The dark bay colt broke his maiden going two turns at Turfway Park in his second start, then put on a show with the addition of blinkers in the 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Cup Juvenile S. (G3) over the same surface. That day, Repent stalked the pace four wide, advanced while four wide around the second turn, took the lead in the upper stretch, then edged clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths while completing the last sixteenth of mile in :6 2/5 seconds. In the Kentucky Cup Juvenile, he finished well and earned a BRIS Speed rating of 98. Repent has been training like a monster since then, including a dazzling four furlongs in :46 2/5 at Churchill Downs on Monday. He too is tactically drawn on the outside and figures to get a clear, midpack stalking trip. Best of all, there is no telling how high his odds will be. He is listed at 30-1 on the morning line and brings regular rider Tony D'Amico. If they all go too fast too early, he could come along for a share.

JOHANNESBURG (Hennessy) is yet another who is undefeated. The Aidan O'Brien trainee is widely regarded as the best two-year-old in Europe. In his last three starts, the bay colt won the Middle Park S. (Eng-G1), Prix Morny (Fr-G1) and Phoenix S. (Ire-G1) by daylight as the odds-on favorite. The bay Kentucky-bred has an awesome turn of foot and is bred to handle the dirt. He figures to be somewhere in midpack before unleashing his rally. Johannesburg will likely be ignored in the wagering and is a good one to use in the exotics at a price.

There are a lot of people, including trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who are predicting JUMP START (A.P. Indy) will run a big race. The dark bay colt outdueled Heavyweight Champ (Two Punch) through the stretch to win the 6 1/2-furlong Saratoga Special S. (G2). In his next start, Jump Start failed to respond in the Hopeful, finishing a well-beaten fifth. In his most recent outing, the Lukas trainee raced close-up along the inside, came wide, then finished well for second behind Officer in the Champagne. Jump Start added blinkers last time and has been finishing nicely in his morning breezes. He'll have the ever-dangerous Pat Day in the saddle and at 20-1 on the morning line, he could surprise a few people.

SAARLAND (Unbridled) broke his maiden going a mile at Belmont with a nice four-wide move around the second turn, then was compromised in the Champagne. In that race, Saarland stumbled badly at the start, dropped back, raced wide, then finished an even fourth. The lightly raced Shug McGaughey trainee, who is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Versailles Treaty (Danzig), is reportedly doing well and could be a live longshot at 30-1 on the morning line under jockey John Velazquez.

The undefeated Siphonic is a big, good-looking horse, and no doubt the real deal, but he must more or less get sent along the rail with Officer to his outside. The David Hofmans trainee broke his maiden going 6 1/2 furlongs in a fast time at Del Mar, then came back to go wire to wire from the one hole in the 1 1/16-mile Breeders' Futurity (G2) at Keeneland, earning a 102 Speed rating. Our concern is that he had everything his own way on a speed-favoring rail at Keeneland and could be overbet in this spot under Jerry Bailey.

ESSENCE OF DUBAI (Pulpit) rallied up the fence to win the one-mile Norfolk S. (G2) at Santa Anita over stablemate IBN AL HAITHAM (GB) (Zafonic) in his latest. The Eoin Harty-trained Godolphin runner likes to attend the early going and figures to be on Officer's outside in the early running. The latter is a talented sort who should have very little trouble winning his first race against lesser. Our knock is that Harty has practically conceded the race to Officer when talking to the media this week, so it's hard to have a lot of confidence in his horses when he doesn't.

FRENCH ASSAULT (French Deputy) stumbled at the start, dueled through the stretch, then finished a good second to Repent last out in the Kentucky Cup. In his previous start, the chestnut colt closed strongly to win the one-mile El Joven S. going away by 11 3/4 lengths at Retama Park. The Desormeaux brothers team up for this one. IT'SALLINTHECHASE (Take Me Out) came running at the end to finish second in the Arlington-Washington Futurity (G2) last out. The Oklahoma-based juvenile is trained by the colorful Wilson Brown, who said "anything can happen in a two-year-old race," and "in Oklahoma, six furlongs is considered a route race." This horse has a long, fluid stride and will try to close late.

PUBLICATION (Petionville) remained undefeated in two starts winning the Arlington-Washington Futurity last out but would have to improve considerably to factor with these.
