LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike), who swept Del Mar's two main juvenile features, the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and Best Pal S. (G2), is the obvious class of the California-based two-year-olds. That doesn't mean, however, that trainer Bob Baffert will have the bay completely cranked for Sunday's $300,000 Norfolk S. (G1) at Santa Anita with the more prestigious and lucrative Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) right around the corner. This 1 1/16-mile Pro-Ride test seems like the best time to go against the likely favorite.

DAVE IN DIXIE (Dixie Union) is our choice to pull off the mild upset. The John Sadler trainee turned in an impressive late kick to win his six-furlong debut at Del Mar by 3 1/4 lengths, and earned a 104 BRIS Late Pace figure. It's that kind of potent late run that can elevate a horse's chances on synthetic, and there is nothing in the colt's pedigree to suggest that the extra five-sixteenths will prove a hindrance. Sadler is off to a strong start at the Oak Tree meet, with his first four starters finishing either first or second.

We'll pick Lookin at Lucky to fill out the exacta. The undefeated colt has not been an overwhelming winner of his three starts, and seems to be the kind that does only just enough to win. That's still a good quality to have in a juvenile as the determination to win is still present. He's another who should only get better as the distances increase.

HURRICANE IKE (Graeme Hall) is another from the Sadler barn, and while well-beaten in both the Best Pal and Del Mar Futurity, he did reduce his margin of defeat in the latter while experiencing a less-than-favorable trip. Despite racing six-wide in the stretch, the Florida-bred put in a nice stretch punch to earnx a 101 Late Pace figure. He can improve stretching out to two turns for the first time.

GALLANT GENT (Yankee Gentleman) got in a useful two-turn prep when taking a minor stakes at seven furlongs over the Fairplex bullring last time. The former claimer is well versed on synthetic, too, having won at both the Hollywood and Del Mar meets. He can contend for a share if this class hike doesn't prove to be too steep.

JOHN SCOTT (Bertrando) seeks to follow in the hoofsteps of his sire, who won the 1991 Norfolk. He's made two brilliant moves from the rear of the field to take both starts, including the I'm Smokin S. for California-breds. Time will tell whether he can stretch out successfully or destined to be a late-closing sprinter. We have a hunch it'll be the latter, so we'll try and beat him here.

JUNG MAN SCOTT (Freud) got the place in the With Anticipation S. (G3) over the Saratoga turf, and his connections have shipped west hoping they have a Breeders' Cup candidate. We're still inclined to back locally-based runners despite this one's preference for more forgiving surfaces. ALFARABI (Yes It's True), PULSION (Include) and CAME ABROAD (Came Home) have all fared well around two-turns, albeit against maidens. We're not quite sure any of them are potential stakes-quality horses, though.

STERLING OUTLOOK (Eurosilver) set the early pace and weakened late in the Del Mar Futurity, and we don't think his job will be any easier here. SEATTLE RULER (Roman Ruler) went unplaced in three of five maiden attempts at Hollywood and Del Mar, but found the winner's circle with an easy score in the Barretts Juvenile in his dirt debut at Fairplex. We believe his future lies on that surface. English import LUCKY RAVE (GB) (Luck Story) has two synthetic wins in his homeland, but he'll be tested for class in this spot.

A field of 13 juvenile fillies has been entered to go 1 1/16 miles in the $300,000 Oak Leaf S. (G1) at Santa Anita on Sunday, and we're tabbing REPO (In Excess [Ire]) to get back to her winning ways. The Doug O'Neill charge captured three of her first four starts, and finished a decent fifth, just two lengths back of winner Mi Sueno (Pulpit), in the Darley Debutante S. (G1). She tried the dirt at Fairplex and just missed by a nose in the Barretts Debutante S. last out, and could continue her forward progression while returning to a synthetic surface in this one. Victor Espinoza rides.

Darley Debutante runner-up BLIND LUCK (Pollard's Vision) was just a length back of Mi Sueno following a pair of easy victories. The chestnut lass broke her maiden by 13 1/4 lengths at Calder in June, then returned a month later on the West Coast under the tutelage of new conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer and added an allowance victory to her line while racing over Del Mar's Polytrack. Hollendorfer shows a nice 20 percent win rate with runners trying a route for the first time, and Blind Luck will be tough to hold off late under Tyler Baze.

PURE CLASS (Purge) made her racing debut in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden test at Del Mar in early August, but it wasn't until trainer John Sadler stretched the dark bay miss out to a mile that she broke her maiden, doing so easily by five lengths. The extra distance here only enhances her chances at the victory, and Hall of Famer Mike Smith in the saddle certainly doesn't hurt.

SOFTLY SINGING (Holy Bull) also goes for Hollendorfer, and the last-out 4 1/4-length maiden winner has a big chance in her stakes bow. The gray filly earned a nice 98 BRIS Late Pace rating for her initial score and gets the services of Joel Rosario. ALWAYS A PRINCESS (Leroidesanimaux [Brz]) overcame a bit of trouble to take her debut at Del Mar, rallying after being squeezed at the start and making up more than 10 lengths to take the win. If she utilizes that same kick, the Bob Baffert charge could be up in time. Garrett Gomez has the call.

WHISPERING HUSH (El Corredor) is still seeking her first score, and while we don't think it will come in this one, the stakes-placed runner might earn a share if she shows the same rally that earned her a 100 Late Pace rating last out. FAIRWAY ROAD (Cuvee) is seeking her third straight win from as many starts here following a victory in the Bustles and Bows S. at Fairplex, but she probably will have to settle for, at best, a placing based on her numbers.

LA NEZ (Storm Cat) was third in the Darley Debutante last out and might find the extra distance of this one too much at this point. FORBIDDEN PARADISE (Ire) (Chineur) was a nose winner over Del Mar's turf last out, and we'll just watch for now to see how she handles the surface switch. BICKERSONS (Silver Deputy) is another who will be trying a synthetic track for the first time after racing on the East Coast for her first three starts. We'll let her beat us as well.

MARALAGO (Thunder Gulch), IT TIZ (Tiznow) and KALOULA (Peace Rules) all look to need an easy spot to factor.

3rd-PURE CLASS

Grade 1 hero COURT VISION (Gulch) is the standout in the $250,000 Kelso H. (G2) at Belmont on Sunday in his first start for trainer Richard Dutrow. The talented four-year-old has been a bit of a letdown after such a promising campaign at three, but the colt should appreciate the class relief in here even if the distance might be shorter than his best. Ramon Dominguez has the call aboard the Kentucky-bred, who should be rolling late.

YORKTOWN (Fr) (Red Ransom) put in a pair of decent performances at Monmouth for Graham Motion and will tackle stakes foes for the first time since debuting in the United States this spring. The bay colt was a solid performer overseas as a sophomore and is coming into his own as of late, so we wouldn't discount the four-year-old under Jeremy Rose.

YIELD BOGEY (Langfuhr) was a fine third versus better over a soft course in the Poker S. (G3) this spring and could be the one to catch turning for home with a repeat of that showing. The gelded five-year-old would benefit greatly from a surface with some give to it. We'll watch the weather intently before plunging on the Pat Kelly charge.

READY'S ECHO (More Than Ready) is winless in two stakes tries over the turf and is often left with too much to do in the latter stages for Todd Pletcher. The four-year-old finished a fine third in the Forego S. (G1) when making up a lot of ground late, but his one-run closing style doesn't fit this event with no early speed.

LE GRAND CRU (Dynaformer) has just one third-place finish from four career turf starts but could get a piece of this as the lone speed in this grass event. The Allen Jerkens pupil lacks the credentials of his foes but should be a factor for most of the race from a tactical standpoint. Jose Lezcano will break from the rail aboard the speedster.

10 CHAIRMAN NOW VIOLETTE RICHARD JR GARCIA A 116

Ten two-year-old turf hopefuls will vie in Sunday's $150,000 Pilgrim S. (G3) on Belmont's Widener turf. We think that this one is all about INTERACTIF (Broken Vow), who romped by 4 1/4 lengths in the With Anticipation S. (G3) last out. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the talented colt was awesome in his turf debut and drew much praise from his jockey, Kent Desormeaux, following his graded win. The freshman simply looks better than his foes and should deliver on an expected short price.

WESTERN FLYER (More Than Ready) showed vast improvement in his second lifetime go for Kiaran McLaughlin after he dusted a maiden field at Monmouth Park. The Kentucky-bred earned a strong 96 BRIS Speed number for his win and gives the impression that there is much more to offer, and we think that he's the lone runner in this field who could give our top pick any trouble. Alan Garcia has the assignment.

ESKENDEREYA (Giant's Causeway) was a closing second in a useful maiden voyage for Pletcher and is now thrown into stakes company, a move which we like due to the connections. The chestnut colt has a top-three chance with even minor improvement.

PADDY O'PRADO (El Prado [Ire]) was a fast-closing second in a maiden tilt two prior, and checked in an even third in the With Anticipation most recently for Dale Romans. The gray colt doesn't appear to be good enough to win this, but he could rally for a minor award if the pace is swift. With Anticipation fourth DEAN'S KITTEN (Kitten's Joy) will need something more than we've seen from him to this point in order to be a factor late on this occasion.

BILLIONS BOY (Johannesburg) has finished first or second in all three career tries for John Kimmel, but the juvenile will need to improve his Speed figures in order to be around in the latter stages today. We're always wary of trainer David Donk in spots like this, as he's produced some huge prices over the years in turf stakes, but we can't rally around his New York-bred SHRIMP DANCER (Kitten's Joy) at this stage of his growth. BRICKLAYER (El Corredor) hasn't shown us enough to consider backing against these. MR. VEGAS (Freud) rolled home from far back to upend New York-bred foes at first asking for Michael Hushion, but moving into open company while stretching out to a route of ground seems like a lot to ask from the gelded chestnut.

CHAIRMAN NOW (Tiznow) is entered for the dirt only, but we're not sure we'd endorse him on the main strip. He hasn't looked all that impressive thus far for conditioner Richard Violette.

A field of nine juvenile fillies will travel 1 1/16 miles in the $150,000 Miss Grillo S. (G3) on Sunday on the Belmont Park inner turf oval. These fields are always a bit tricky in determining who might be ready to fire, so we will look for one who should offer a fair amount of value.

ZODIAC GIRL (Aldebaran) reminds us, from a running standpoint, of the filly who won this in 2008, Maram (Sahm), so we will give this one the nod in hopes that trainer Chad Brown could win his second straight in this grass affair. A three-length maiden heroine versus claiming foes, the intriguing chestnut has had four works since her debut for a conditioner who often does better with second-time starters. Jose Lezcano retains the mount.

P. G. Johnson S. runner-up SMART SEATTLE (Smart Strike) has every right to improve in her second route try and should be a big factor with any improvement for Graham Motion. The bay filly was a sharp first-out winner at Saratoga and gives the impression of a filly who can handle a distance like this with ease, so we'll definitely use the Pennsylvania-bred from the rail.

NEGLIGEE (Northern Afleet) had run two solid races in Canada before being sent to the United States and trainer John Terranova in advance of this tilt. Second in the Ontario Debutante S. over the Woodbine Polytrack last out, the Kentucky-bred should be able to handle the sod and Terranova is a solid trainer, so we see nothing wrong with this one.

The blue-blooded HATHEER (Storm Cat) has run a pair of solid races for Kiaran McLaughlin, including a commanding maiden win at this distance upstate in her latest test. The top prospect has good tactical speed and has done little wrong thus far, but we fear that she'll be overbet and will take a stand against in this wide-open event. ZILVA (Successful Appeal) closed in :29 and change for the final five-sixteenths of her maiden win and appears to have a useful future on the lawn. Coupled in the wagering with our second pick for Motion, this one adds some insurance if her stablemate fails to fire.

P. G. Johnson winner TAPITSFLY (Tapit) led throughout in her recent stakes win, which was her turf debut, but the competition in here is much more than she saw last out and she could be vulnerable at short odds. Maiden DAD'S CRAZY (Langfuhr) drew widest of all and might make more sense against non-winners for Todd Pletcher. Motion's third entrant, CHECK THE LABEL (Stormin Fever), was a fine maiden victress at Colonial two back but has shown little in a pair of affairs on the main oval. We'll wait for this one to win at a bigger venue before we take a chance.

Main-track only entrant FUZZY BRITCHES (Pollard's Vision) would be a major threat if the rains washed this off the lawn.
